British Virgin Islands

Destination

British Virgin Islands

The Sailing Capital of the Caribbean

Why British Virgin Islands?

Fifty islands scattered across crystalline waters, steady 15-knot trade winds, and anchorages so well-protected a first-timer could navigate them confidently. The BVI is where modern charter sailing was born — and it still sets the standard.

British Virgin Islands sailing

Best Season

November through June. Peak season December–April with consistent 15–20 knot easterly trade winds, calm seas, and zero hurricanes. Water temps hover around 80°F year-round.

Perfect For

First-time charterers, couples, families with teens, friend groups. Short distances between islands (2-8 miles typical) make this the most relaxed sailing in the world. Perfect for anyone who wants equal parts sailing, snorkeling, and beach bars.

Must-Visit Spots

Where to drop anchor

The Baths, Virgin Gorda

The Baths, Virgin Gorda

Cathedral-sized granite boulders form a labyrinth of grottoes, tidal pools, and hidden beaches. Snorkel through the rock formations at low tide — it's otherworldly. Anchor in the mooring field just offshore.

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

Home of the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar where the Painkiller cocktail was invented. Swim ashore (no dock — hence the 'soggy dollar'), sink your toes in powder-white sand, and understand why this is the most famous beach bar in the Caribbean.

The Indians

The Indians

Four pinnacle rocks jutting from the sea between Norman Island and Peter Island. The snorkeling here is world-class — brain corals, barracuda, sea turtles, and nurse sharks circle the rocks.

Anegada

Anegada

The only coral island in the volcanic BVI chain. Famous for Loblolly Bay's deserted beach, the Horseshoe Reef (third largest in the world), and the freshest grilled lobster you'll ever eat at the Wonky Dog.

Cooper Island Beach Club

Cooper Island Beach Club

A sustainably-run beach bar with craft rum, local microbrews, and a coffee roastery — accessible only by boat. The mooring field here is peaceful, and the snorkeling at Cistern Point is superb.

Sample Itinerary

7 days in British Virgin Islands

Day 1: Road Town, Tortola → Norman Island

Collect your catamaran from Road Town. Motor down the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Norman Island — the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Snorkel The Caves, then grab a mooring at The Bight for dinner at Pirates Bight.

Day 2: Norman Island → The Indians → Peter Island

Morning snorkel at The Indians rock formation. Sail to Peter Island's Deadman's Bay for a beach lunch, then anchor in Great Harbour for sunset.

Day 3: Peter Island → Cooper Island → Salt Island

Quick sail to Cooper Island Beach Club for coffee and a dive at Cistern Point. Afternoon visit to Salt Island to snorkel the RMS Rhone wreck — a 19th-century mail ship sunk in pristine condition.

Day 4: Salt Island → Virgin Gorda

Sail to The Baths for the iconic boulder snorkel. Grab a mooring in Spanish Town for provisioning and dinner at CocoMaya — Asian-Caribbean fusion right on the waterfront.

Day 5: Virgin Gorda → Anegada

The only open-water passage of the trip (12 miles). Arrive at Anegada's Setting Point for the freshest lobster lunch in the Caribbean. Afternoon on Loblolly Bay — often deserted, always stunning.

Day 6: Anegada → Jost Van Dyke

A longer sail day rewarded with White Bay's legendary beach. Soggy Dollar Bar Painkillers in the afternoon, then dinner at Foxy's Taboo in Diamond Cay.

Day 7: Jost Van Dyke → Cane Garden Bay → Road Town

Morning at Great Harbour, then a final stop at Cane Garden Bay, Tortola's most beautiful beach. Easy motor back to Road Town marina for checkout.
