Timing is everything when it comes to chartering a yacht. The same destination can be paradise in one month and miserable (or impossible) in another. Wind, waves, rain, temperature, crowds, and pricing all shift dramatically by season. This guide to the best time to charter a yacht breaks down every major sailing region month by month so you can book with confidence.
Caribbean — Best Time to Charter a Yacht: November to May
The Caribbean's charter season follows the opposite rhythm of hurricane season. When it's cold in North America and Europe, the Caribbean is at its best — dry, warm, and breezy.
November – Early December
Our favorite time for the Caribbean. Hurricane season is over, the trade winds have returned (15–20 knots), everything is green from the rain season, and charter rates are 20–30% below peak. Fewer boats on the water. The BVI, Bahamas, and St. Martin are all excellent.
Mid-December – April
Christmas through Easter is peak season. Perfect weather (78–85°F, low humidity, steady trades), but highest prices and most crowded anchorages. Christmas/New Year weeks can be double the normal peak rate. Book 9–12 months ahead.
January–March is the sweet spot within peak: great weather without the holiday premium.
May – Early June
Transitional period. Weather is still good (hotter, more humid), prices drop significantly, and you'll have anchorages nearly to yourself. Some charter companies start closing bases, so selection narrows.
June – October (Hurricane Season)
Most charter companies don't operate during hurricane season. Insurance restrictions, unpredictable weather, and risk of named storms. Some southern Caribbean destinations (Grenada, Trinidad, ABC islands) are below the hurricane belt and charter year-round, but options are very limited.
Caribbean destinations: BVI · Bahamas · Martinique · St. Martin
Mediterranean — Best Time to Charter a Yacht: May to October
The Med is summer sailing. Long days, warm water, reliable wind, and the world's best food scene waiting at every harbor.
May – Mid-June
Spring in the Med is magical. Water is warming up (still coolish for swimming in May at 20°C), flowers are blooming, tourist crowds haven't arrived, and charter rates are 25–40% below peak. Restaurants are open, happy to see early-season visitors. Wind is moderate and pleasant. Our top recommendation for first-time Med charters.
July – August
Maximum heat, maximum crowds, maximum prices. Water temperature is perfect (25–27°C), days are long (sunset at 8:30pm), and every island is buzzing. The Meltemi wind is strongest in the Cyclades (exciting but demanding sailing). Croatia and the French/Italian Riviera are packed. Book 6–12 months ahead.
September – Mid-October
The Mediterranean's best-kept secret. Water is at its warmest (26°C+), summer crowds have cleared, prices drop 20–30%, wind is gentler than July–August, and the light has that golden September quality. Restaurants are still open but not overwhelmed. Greece, Croatia, and Turkey are all exceptional in September.
November – April
Most Med charter bases close October/November and reopen April/May. Winter brings cold water, unpredictable weather, and closed restaurants. The Canary Islands are the exception — year-round sailing with great winter weather.
Med destinations: Greece · Croatia · Turkey · Italy
Southeast Asia — Best Time to Charter a Yacht: November to April
SE Asia's charter season is dictated by the monsoon. The northeast monsoon (Nov–Apr) brings dry weather and manageable winds to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia's western coast.
December – March
The best weather window for Thailand (Phuket, Langkawi, Phang Nga Bay) and Myanmar's Mergui Archipelago. Dry, warm (30°C+), light-to-moderate NE winds. Christmas/New Year is peak pricing; January–March offers better value with the same weather.
November & April
Transitional months. Generally good weather with occasional rain. Prices are lower and availability is better. November is slightly riskier (monsoon may still linger); April is more reliable.
May – October (Southwest Monsoon)
Heavy rain, strong winds, rough seas on the Andaman Sea side. Some operators move boats to the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) which has different weather patterns — check specific destinations.
SE Asia destinations: Thailand · Langkawi
Indian Ocean — Best Time to Charter a Yacht: Varies by Destination
The Indian Ocean spans the equator, so timing depends heavily on which side you're on:
Seychelles
Best time: April–May and October–November (inter-monsoon periods). Light winds, calm seas, best visibility for snorkeling. Avoid: June–August (strong SE trades, rough seas). The Seychelles are warm year-round (27–30°C) — it's the wind and waves that determine the season.
Maldives
Best time: January–April (NE monsoon, dry season). Crystal visibility, calm atolls, manta ray season. Avoid: June–August (SW monsoon, rain, swells). November–December is shoulder with good value.
Madagascar & Mozambique
Best time: April–November (dry season, cooler but pleasant). Whale season (humpbacks) is July–September along the Mozambique coast. Avoid: January–March (cyclone risk).
Indian Ocean destinations: Seychelles · Maldives

Pricing Seasons: How the Best Time Affects Yacht Charter Cost
Season affects charter pricing dramatically — the same boat can cost 40–60% more in peak season vs. shoulder. Here's the general pattern:
- Peak season: Full price. Book 8–12 months ahead. Limited availability.
- Shoulder season: 20–35% discount. Book 4–6 months ahead. Good selection, great weather.
- Off-season: 35–50% discount where available. Limited bases open. Weather is a gamble.
- Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year, Easter): Premium pricing — often 50–100% above regular peak rates.
